Get out of town!

Amber's Wedding

The girls were mesmerized by the bride.

Halloween 2010:  Featuring a cheerleader and her poodle (the poodle was not a happy puppy...until she found out there was candy involved)

All the little cousins (and Uncle Rick)

We had a fun, relaxing weekend with our good friends at a cabin in Donnelly.  Here we are enjoying the nice crisp air!

We were able attend a very special day for our good friends, Billy & Katherine.  (I forgot to get a picture)  But afterwards I met this little beauty!

Me and my sweet niece, Krinn!

So now we'll stay in town for a little while and prep for the holidays!!!!  Yay!!!

And the winner is...

The highly respected Clinton Smith called me last Friday with some "terribly exciting news".  I was shocked.  My hands were shaking as I took down the information.  I wanted to scream, but I resisted (probaby a good choice).  Jared opened the door and I mouthed the words, "I won"!  His eyes said it all.  I could hear him running, telling other people...and everything seems kind-of blurry from there on out.

Check out the official announcement here!!!

It has been a week full of anticipation and appreciation.  I was struck by the friendliness of the judges, their ease of conversation, their graciousness.  I am thrilled they have chosen me!  I am honored to represent DesignSherpa in Paris and at Maison de Objet.

My mind has been reeling.  I have lots of exciting plans...and soon a big exciting announcement as well (although this is pretty hard to top) so stay tuned......

On the Subject of Inspiration...

Has this ever happened to you?

You're driving along in your car, and it's bright so you reach up for your sunglasses and realize they are still on the file cabinet at home, which by the way, still needs those new files in it that you were supposed to be labeling yesterday when you ran out of the office because child #2 figured out that if she played in the plant dirt, she would get a nice warm bath, again, which didn't do much since she is currently in the backseat covered in dumdum sucker and fishy crackers, which reminds you that you are STILL in the car listening to that obnoxious radio commercial that plays every 2 minutes and that bright sun is literally RIGHT in your eyes...where ARE those sunglasses?!!!  And then you pull up to your destination wondering how in the world you got from point A to point B without paying attention?

Such is life.

One day you're five, next day you realize you just spent a Friday night talking Medicare changes with your husband.

So when something comes along that makes you stop, think, and write it down, it's really quite an experience.

In June I entered the previously noted "What Inspires You?" contest.  The first requirement was a 100 word essay on "What Inpires You?" accompanied with a photo.  So many things inspire me, but I thought back to a time when I was truly struck with inspiration, and luckily, I had a photo.  This was my first entry:

My inspiration, often disguised, was once boats at sunset. The movement of line struck me and I saw potential: the base of a modern chair, the cables of an eccentric light fixture, a work of abstract art. The sunset blended grey blues with temperate oranges and I saw a vivid master suite with an atmosphere of balmy repose.

Inspiration is simple, ornate, historic, progressive and the art of combining it all. Inspiration is individual creations, first-time ever debuts. And in the search for beauty in hidden places, the recognition of such makes not only design, but life overall, truly inspirational.

My first entry was selected as one of the top 100 essays (a quarter-finalist).  The next round asked for a 350 word essayabout an interior or architectural design topic that communicated both my unique passion for design and writing style.  I submitted the following:

On the Concept of Good Design

I once bought a can opener. It was a sleek blend of black and chrome. It fit comfortably in my hand. It was functional with a practical price tag. It washed up easily and hid discreetly in my kitchen drawer. It performed its purpose, and simply put, it was good.

The day I bought that can opener, a light turned on in my head, and a design philosophy was born. From then on I knew: good design is everywhere, waiting to be recognized and utilized. It doesn’t have to be flashy. It doesn’t have to be brand name. It doesn’t have to be exactly what I’m looking for. But it is always in the details.

Good design can be an object alone, like my can opener, or it can be larger. In an interior space, for example, good design radiates into a feeling, which envelopes me. Color, line and light sweeten my senses and sway my mood. I taste the cranberry reds, I swim in the sea foam greens. Pattern, shape and texture position me in time and tell me a story. I wonder at baroque intricacies and drool over the influence of Greek klismos. The design has no pinpoint to its greatness, only a subtle rhythm that unites it and makes me wonder at the ease of the union. Although it may or may not be my personal style of choice, I am comfortable and I want to stay. This is good design.

Basic design elements and principles apply to all venues. I once found in my late grandmother’s belongings a 1950’s swimsuit, originally made in San Francisco. The line, pattern and material used kept it bold and beautiful for over forty years, and the quality of the make allowed it to be usable still. Good design means timelessness! The day I walked into a public restroom with my toddler and saw a child-sized sink and soap dispenser, I almost jumped with joy. Good design means progression!

My passion is in the quest for good design. My thrill is in recognizing it, utilizing it, and sharing it.

My second essay qualified me as one of ten semi-finalists.  I was then asked to create a video that was no longer than 3 minutes which was both entertaining and informative about some element of home design.  It could only be 10mb, so it's a little grainy.  If you had seen it at 90 mb, you could actually make out my facial features! Here it is on the website. Mine is the second one.

I am one of three finalists in the competition.  I was interviewed via telephone by the celebrity dream panel of judges.  Just talking with them was inspiring!  The results will be out on or around November 7th!

I have loved every minute.  It has helped me pay attention between point A and point B!  Regardless of the outcome, I have lived, loved and learned.  There is no such thing as a wasted experience.

And I'm just dying to know..."What Inspires You?"

Fabulous Fall

I love Fall.  Here are some updates:

I planned a mother/daughter Halloween party and it was a fun time with a great showing!
Lots of games, food, and these adorable crafts.  (I saw a store selling these spider webs for $10 each.  Mine were 2 for $1 and just as cute.  The pumkin idea was good 'ol Martha Stewart.

Paige loves pumpkins.

Our "Hollywood Halloween" party was such a blast.  I'll refrain from posting any of our friends' pictures for the sake of their privacy (and/or pride)

Jared insisted on a costume with a mustache, so we went with Dogg the Bounty hunter and his wife Beth.  Too bad we didn't get the body shot picture because we were very convincing.

Some of our guests included:
Mulan, Indiana Jones, GI Joe and GI Jane, Dorothy and Scarecrow, Mario and Luigi, Napolean + Movie Girlfriend (forgot her name), and Bonnie and Clyde.  They all rocked their costumes.

I was busy hosting and forgot to take pictures of the food table with tuxedoed sparkling cider, and lots of delicious treats.  I also didn't take pics of most of the decorations.

Gotta love the hanging pompoms...easy, cheap, and fast.  Maci can make these and she's 5. (:

It's been such a busy month (which I love)  Lots more Fabulous Fall coming soon!

Check it Out

To my fellow design lovers:

If you have a few minutes...check out this great social networking site for designers.  All my designer friends out there may be interested in the current countdown of the top 100 entries in this "What Inspires You" contest.  It's easy to get caught up in projects, but this contest will bring you back to inspiration at its best!

Paige sees windmills

This was on the way to the Oregon coast.  To say the least, Paige was pretty enthusiastic about the windmills, the mountains, and the water.  We were all kind-of relieved when she finally fell asleep.

My summer vacation...

This summer rocked.

author's note: by "summer" I mean the season in case you're confused....although I, Summer the person, have also been known to rock.

The party started in May and hasn't stopped since then. Here's a pictorial review in case any of my readers have stuck through the once-a-month (at best) posts.

We tagged along with Jared for a day/work trip to McCall. See how hard we're all working? This alley ice cream was the best. We couldn't even close to finish our $1.75 giant 1-scoop of deliciousness.

We went to Utah to welcome home my long lost Uncle Alan and Aunt Mary who have been in Korea for 3 years on a mission. We stayed with Josh and Marcie and also got to see Sondra and my parents which was a treat.

Here are the girls after we walked out of the Rugrats movie. It was not worth anyone's time, including Paige's which should tell you how worthless it truly was.

My awesome husband gave me a surprise birthday party. I was REALLY surprised and so so spoiled! Even Colette came up from Twin Falls (last second literally) and it meant the world to me. I'll never forget it. Thank you J-dawg, you're the best. (:

We had fun in the sun. Boise has beautiful summers and we took full advantage. The pictures that I FORGOT to take of us having more fun in the sun included boating, floating the river, biking the greenbelt, and lots of BBQ's! So these will have to do. (:

I think we got the spontaneous bug, which is most definately contagious. One day we dropped everything and went to the Oregon coast. It was so so so fun. We saw some of our good friends there and they took us to the Tillamook Cheese factory (in case you didn't see the sign).

Then we went to Astoria...maybe you recognize this giant rock from the Goonies. We saw starfish and crabs and were just struck by the beauty of the entire place.

I couldn't keep these little girls out of the water...even in 60-some degree weather they were determined to play until we were ALL freezing and covered in sand. It was so worth it.

We stopped at the Portland temple on the way home. Beautiful. Maci and I walked the grounds...and when I saw the security guard after us we walked faster and faster. But come to find out he just wanted to explain some architectural detailing and symbolism to us, which was really memorable, especially for Maci.

First dance/cheer recital! She was simply adorable and knew all her moves. We could hear her signature giggle over the music. Look forward to seeing this outfit again around October 31st...or thereabouts. (:

AND THEN IT WAS HERE!!! The last five years flashed before my eyes and my little baby girl went to Kindergarten. She was so excited and nervous[t]...(she likes to add the "t"). I'm still in shock.

When we walked into the playground area and she saw loads of screaming kids running around like little crazy monkeys, her face went WHITE and she looked terrified. I go, "Maci, are you ok?" She said, "I'm nervous to make friends." But as scared as she suddenly was, she got her courage and walked right into that classroom without a tear. So brave. I was much less brave and less courageous and less teary eyed. But I'm better now.

So THAT was our summer. Hope yours was just as good. Now on to football...

Lucky 7

Paige is such a sweet little thing, but she's got some sass as well. She doesn't hesitate to let her opinion be heard. She likes to play on our laundry cart.
Father's Day
For our 7th Anniversary (we're calling it lucky 7) I surprised Jared with tickets to the comedian Brian Reagan. It was so much fun. We laughed for an hour-1/2 straight. We both love him so it was awesome. Unfortunately the surprise was kind-of ruined about a month ago, but at least the anticipation was still there.
Then our friends took us out to Lucky Peak lake on the first hot hot day here. It was over 100, so it was a perfect day to go boating, and we had such a blast.
Paige LOVED the waves in the water and was not timid in the least. We had to keep her from jumping out of the boat. A little different than Maci.
Finally, warm weather!

6.08.2010

Wow, 2 months since the last post, really?

Recap Time:

Go Grandpa!!! My mom and dad visited in April for my dad's race in Boise --Colette and Will came, too and we had a blast (as usual!). Luckily my dad was here to help us when a pipe broke in our crawl space and luckily I heard water gushing at 3:00am so we could turn the water off. ( I really should thank Paige for her terrible sleep habits that saved our crawl space)
THEN: Our best ever was our vacation to Disneyworld in early May. Here's Maci at the airport before we left (so excited! but something in her shoe...)
It's a small world. Paige was screaming with excitement. Maci was crazy as you can see in the picture. But that's just Maci! (:
Highlight: Fairy Godmother told Maci she was as beautiful as Cinderella. We were all enchanted.
Paige at Mickey's Gate. She loved Mickey...from a distance.
My bug-eyed girlies at It's a Bug's Life.
Animal Kingdom was amazing!!!! Maci got to be the volunteer at the Birds of Flight show and sent a big bird flying right towards my head ***twice*** on accident. The crowd was rolling. I was only a little scared, but it was worth it. Maci said, "did you hear it? They cheered for me!"
Animal Kindgdom was our family favorite.
Epcot! Donald didn't say much.
Maci was calling out the fairies from this fairy house at Epcot. Tops my favorite moments at D-world list. I wished so badly that a fairy would fly out of there and make her dreams come true. Maybe I should write to Disney.
Strike a pose, kitty cat! Paige said "pretty" for the first time when she saw Maci with her makeup on. We didn't know she knew that word!
At Hollywood studios...Honey Shrunk the kids. Paige found this water fountain and wouldn't leave it (did I mention it was 93 outside?) Look at those gorgeous blues!
American Idol was our fav. attraction at Hollywood Studios. We watch it as a family and it totally makes you feel like you're there. Here's me and my official "idol" pin. I was in the same room as Aaron Kelly (which means more to Maci, since she thinks he's cute.)
We had such a blast. We want to go back ummmmm now.
Then when we got back we had Josh and Marcie and kids, and Colette and Will and kids, and Amber come to visit for Memorial Day. We loved every minute. Here's bumber cars at Pojos.
Cute Cousins!!!
Then my dad (the best) helped us get this gem. Jared suddenly got way cooler in my book, and I try to find excuses to drive it..."Um, well I have to haul some....groceries and....I just need to drive your truck, ok?"
Love you all!
